Is it ok to lay natural stone tiles like slate on top of an existing vinyl covered kitchen floor?

I'm working on upgrading my kitchen floor. Instead of stripping the vinyl floor, I'm thinking of just applying a primer and then setting the new slate tiles I bought. Is that advisable to do or will the slate tiles not hold it's place with this technique?
